I’d like to get into varmint hunting with a rifle (currently with a shotgun).
Primarily, I’m looking for something to kill coyotes with (maybe groundhogs but they are few and far between here) and don’t care about pelts.
My issue though is that I’m likely going on a prarie dog hunt. I live in the midwest so this is likely only something I’ll do a couple times in my life.
I have a 17hmr but these guys like shooting past it’s effective range.
The new rifle would be my primary gun for that shoot.
Ammunition cost and overheating are my concerns.
A couple points
1. I don’t buy a lot of guns - never have. Nor do I like selling my guns for sentimental reasons.
2. I also don’t shoot alot at the range.
3. As a deer rifle, I only have a 7mag. It might be nice to have something to back that up with especially if I’m only hunting does (bucks can go up beyond 300 pounds here so I’d like the extra power)
4. I don’t know if I can justify buying a 223 or 22-250 for such limited specific use (albeit a more logical choice for p-dogs).
Thoughts?
I’m buying a Tikka T3 Super Varmint but i’m unsure which calibre to go with. It will be mostly used for medium to long range varmint hunting, of course, but occasionally deer too so it needs to have some stopping power without being overkill for varmint.
These are the options:
204 Ruger
222 Rem
223 Rem
22-250 Rem
243 Win
260 Rem
308 Win
Thanks in advance
Had a groundhog making a burrow in my ditch bank, so she had to go….
Alec Baldwin played Jack in Hunt For Red October
Harrison Ford: Patriot Games, CLear and Present Danger
Ben Afleck (best one): Sum of all Fears.
But who should be next?
George Clooney wants it, but:
Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation)
John Hamm (Day the Earth Stood Still)
Kevin Spacey (god help us all if he gets the role)
Vigo Mortinson
Nathan Fillion
Guy Pearce
Im not sure if any of these really could do what has been done all ready. Harrison Ford would be hard to top, and Sum of all fears was writen around Ben Afleck. In fact, Tom Clancy was so impressed by Ben that he wrote Red Rabbit in hopes Ben would play him in a movie.

they are both for sport and in both the animal always dies. what’s the difference between watching two dogs fight and shooting deer or squirrels. Even though people can eat deer or squirrels people don’t eat them to survive they do it for fun.
i am 13 i hunt in middle illinois. it is mixed country with farmland and fields. the coyotes have really taken a toll on the deer. i might eventually hunt fox and other varmints. i plan to use the fur. i want a gun that will take them cleanly at 250 yards with minimal pelt damage. as i said earlier i plan to use a .223. i would really appreciate it if no one calls me cruel.
graphic not for kids
I just saw this mentioned in the Hunting section. It must be fairly fresh, and have something to do with gun regulations. Can someone enlighten me? Thank you.
Flika-This could be very interesting. Thanks for answering.
Hey everyone. My dad just got done telling me that i could get a varmint rifle for my birthday i already have like 3 other large rifles.I live in the country but there are still houses around. It’s legal to shoot any kinda game with any kind of gun out here in texas. But i need to know what kind of caliber gun should i use.I need something with a lot of knock down power but cant go far as in over 350 yards. So i was thinking about a single shot .223 but i dont know.I will be hunting varmints and predators but i can only get a rifle but i dont wanna spend over 0.
I have a .243 bolt action but it travels to far of a distance.
i bought a 120 lb. crossbow and wanted to do some varmint/predator hunting with it, i have some good broadheads i have in my compound and was wondering if i could use them?
Nighttime fox hunting. This hunt features a double kill. One of the foxes was missing her tail and one ear.

In the past I’ve been 100% against hunting, because as some of you may know, I was brainwashed by PETA into believing that all killing, even if it’s just stepping on an ant or buying a hamburger, is evil and is a sin and blah blah blah. (Fortunately I’ve snapped out of that phase now and I KNOW for certain that PETA is retarded.) Now, I think moderate hunting of animals that are not endangered, such as deer, is acceptable since very few of the deer’s natural predators remain in the wild to keep the population down (and as long as the hunter doesn’t just kill the deer to make a trophy). I also know that some people use dogs like spaniels and retrievers to aid in the hunt, which I have nothing against unless the dog hates his work.
So I’ve been wondering, which breeds are used the most for hunting, and what exactly do they do during the hunt? Like, do they carry the birds back to the car, or what? Just curious!
Oh yeah, and if any of you are hunters, is it fun? What’s the experience like? I’m thinking about hunting maybe once in a while when I grow up so I can give my dogs a wild, healthy source of meat (better than the processed stuff at the stores)….still thinking, since sometimes hunters are accidentally shot by other hunters.
Quote - "How would you know if a dog hates his job?"
I’m actually not sure. I’ve never hunted, unless you count the many times my Bichon frise and I have chased squirrels and rabbits for fun, but I guess maybe the dog would growl every time his owner took out his hunting gear. That idea did not come from PETA. It formed only, say, a week ago - I promised myself that if I ever became a hunter, I would never FORCE a dog to assist me during my hunts. I would bring him along if he seemed eager to do the job. That’s all.
shooting a groundhog
Greetings.
I’m about to invest in my first rifle. I live i Norway, and will use this rifle mainly for Big game hunting. First and foremost, Caribous, beaver but maybe one day, also moose.
My question is, what caliber should i choose for best distance and take down capacity.
I have looked at following calibers, the 7mm rem mag, .308 and finally the .30-06
Do you guys have any suggestions on what calibre i should invest in?
thx
Me and 3 of my hunting buddies are going coyote hunting soon. If we call in some other predator than a coyote. what can we do (besides stop calling) to keep it from coming in closer to us. We don’t want to put ourselves in a situation were shooting it is our only option.
I have always not liked the idea of fox hunting but now i know what happened to them i HATE it! The foxes are chased round the field by the dogs (they have been trained to do it, it is not there fault) then when they can’t run any longer they let the dogs rip them to shreds.
Don’t you think there is a better way of getting the numbers down than that. I’m sure i do!
excuse me there are two ways of hunting foxes thankyou very much!!
Chris P look above this…
for Varmint hunting and also what kind of scope would go good with it I’m looking for something in the price range of 0.00 to ,500.00
Does any one know were I can hunt jack rabbits in northern california or a web site I can go to to find areas thank you
I would buy a .22 rifle but i live inside city limits so I cant legally use one. Just need a good air rifle to shoot squirrels. I was looking at the Gamo Varmint Hunter Air Rifle it is not that expensive and looks fairly well.
Could anybody tell me if the stock is that cheap plastic or is it solid good quality plastic. Give me what you think about this rifle.
Does anyone know of any other pellet rifles that are good and have a wooden or synthetic a wooden stock and under 400$ bucks
