Hunting Dogs Archives

one dog can walk without a leash but is not trained to hunt but the other one no’s what he is doing and will do anyting to get the kill back to me but will escape to get a rabbit, bird or anyother small game

I have got my Lab trained and ready for hunt tests and hunting. I watched the process and would love to learn how to do the training myself. I was wondering if there was someone who you could go to, to learn how to train these dogs for this. Books and videos do not do it justice. thanks, Dave

I have been thinking of buying a German Shorthair puppy I recently saw at a breeder. It will be primarily a family pet but I might hunt with her a little. Has anybody had bad experiences with GSP as family pets?

hunting such as live coursing with sighthounds?

hunting boar/bear/big cats with dogs?

What was the aims of the campaign?
What Methods did they Use?
Was it successful?

3 are puppies 14 weeks and parents are almost two years old.I need them to be able to track and as guard dogs..
I guess the puppies had pupps i dont know, I read an ad about it and I need them for hunting. Could you estimate a price on just the trainning I alreay know how much they cost.

I would also like to know species of dog sutiable for hunting truffles

I would assume different dogs with different perks working together would be more efficient, right?

I love to hunt and my grandpal always used to hunt with dogs so I want to too. Please give me at least 5 breeds to make my options more broad.
Thank you in advance.

Can you divide them into "types" of hunting?
How do they "hunt"?
What do they "hunt"?
HOW?
Do you consider the retrievers as "hunting" dogs? Why or why not?

Which Hounds are "hunting" dogs?
How do they "hunt" & what?

Which Terriers "hunt"?
Which "work"?
What’s the difference?
What quarry?

…what are the activities that *may* be described as "hunting" w/dogs?
Are they still used so?
Ah…a little clarification….
Which AKC Groups contain "hunting dogs"?

I have a rat terrier that is a great squirrel dog. He trees squirrels better than any other I have ever seen. He is the envy of all my hunting buds, and some of them are asking for a puppy by him. So I am considering breeding him to produce excellent hunting dogs. What type of breed would be a good choice for mating my dog? What are some other breeds that are known for their squirrel hunting prowess?

can you use them for deer, hogs, and black bear hunting? anyone with experience with these dogs? thanks

I have a beagle and i want him to be happy so people say that beagles love hunting so i was looking for a park for dogs but i think hunting would be better so please help me.

have 2 pointer puppies to give away.

I want to get a beagle, and I have a 3 year old little bro. If they are exited, I think I’ll get a pom.

I have a 7 year old Treeing Walker Coonhound. He’s very sweet and likes people, but he does like to bark at cats, but he usually doesn’t chase them. He’s more likely to chase a rabbit or squirrel. I really want a cat, but the question is, could my dog get used to a cat, or would he tear it to shreds regardless?

they are both for sport and in both the animal always dies. what’s the difference between watching two dogs fight and shooting deer or squirrels. Even though people can eat deer or squirrels people don’t eat them to survive they do it for fun.

In the past I’ve been 100% against hunting, because as some of you may know, I was brainwashed by PETA into believing that all killing, even if it’s just stepping on an ant or buying a hamburger, is evil and is a sin and blah blah blah. (Fortunately I’ve snapped out of that phase now and I KNOW for certain that PETA is retarded.) Now, I think moderate hunting of animals that are not endangered, such as deer, is acceptable since very few of the deer’s natural predators remain in the wild to keep the population down (and as long as the hunter doesn’t just kill the deer to make a trophy). I also know that some people use dogs like spaniels and retrievers to aid in the hunt, which I have nothing against unless the dog hates his work.

So I’ve been wondering, which breeds are used the most for hunting, and what exactly do they do during the hunt? Like, do they carry the birds back to the car, or what? Just curious!
Oh yeah, and if any of you are hunters, is it fun? What’s the experience like? I’m thinking about hunting maybe once in a while when I grow up so I can give my dogs a wild, healthy source of meat (better than the processed stuff at the stores)….still thinking, since sometimes hunters are accidentally shot by other hunters. :( Quote - "How would you know if a dog hates his job?"

I’m actually not sure. I’ve never hunted, unless you count the many times my Bichon frise and I have chased squirrels and rabbits for fun, but I guess maybe the dog would growl every time his owner took out his hunting gear. That idea did not come from PETA. It formed only, say, a week ago - I promised myself that if I ever became a hunter, I would never FORCE a dog to assist me during my hunts. I would bring him along if he seemed eager to do the job. That’s all.

Ok. I am going to get a dog, and I want a good duck/coon hunting dog. I also want to be a friendly, good with familys type of dog. Is a cocker spaniel good for that? if not is there a type of dog that would be good for that. it can’t have short hair ethier.
and it would not be dealing with little kids and things. the only person who would play with it would be a 12 year old girl, and then it would be hunting dog too. and it is OK if it’s not a good coon dog. i am more concerned about duck hunting.
