Groundhog Hunting Archives

hello, i want to start hunting, and i have chosen to go with the .243 caliber. i chose this cal. because i want to hunt smaller game such as coyotes. groundhogs, etc. however, i also want to hunt deer occasionally. with the .243 i can do both. i will not be hunting larger game than deer until i am older (when i have more money) and then i will just buy a rifle for elk, etc. so please don’t suggest a different cal.

i have been searching for a good .243 rifle for awhile now and can’t seem to find one, i was hoping all you people out there could help me. If you can show me a rifle with in the specs i am looking at, that would be great.

i am looking for a rifle with a synthetic stock preferably, but, if i like the rifle i may just make an exception and go with wood, and i am also on a budget, as i am only 15. so i want to spend 0 dollars or less, but if need be i may go up to 0.

i was also looking for a scope that i could use but i am unsure of which one to get. i would like a variable power, mil-dot scope, probably with a power of 3-9x but I’m also not sure how big of an objective lens to get? i was looking at maybe a 40? and as i stated before i am on a budget so I’m looking to spend 0 dollars, but if i need to i will spend about -25 dollars more.

But, if you guys can point me to a good combo deal that would be perfect, so i don’t need to go and get both the rifle and scope.

thank you in advance for your help, and i hope i gave you enough info and specifications.

p.s.
i was looking at the Tikka t3 lite rifle because my friend has one in .270 and it is a nice rifle but it is at the top of my price range. also i had my eyes on a Remington m770, i also like this rifle but haven’t seen one in real life.
yes, i have looked at the mosin, i know it is cheap but im not sure i would like the large bullets on the small game… and what is a turn down kit?
also do these rifle’s come left-handed?
sorry, i thought i said i was left-handed… but i guess not.

I am going to my grandparents farm to varmint shoot, ( groundhogs) mostly and what gun should i use? most shots will be 25-100 yds and i will be hunting in a square mile radius. most groundhogs are at least 5lbs. 7.62×54, 12 Gauge #7/12 or 00 or .243? I want the pelt if i can.

i am buying a pellet/air rifle soon. i was thinking on getting the crosman storm xt its .177 cal..but wasnt sure if thats the gun for hunting pest and targets if not let me know..but lets get to the real Question..which caliber is more powerful..a .177 cal or a .22 cal..i need to know cause i will be hunting anywhere from birds to groundhogs(squrrels and rabitts too) thanks for the answer..the person who supplies a picture of another air gun i should get and tell me what ammo i should get and what cal. of a gun to buy completely will get best answer..i would like a "longer" explanation
Thanx alot

I love to hunt coyotes year around, in Ohio there are no bag limits, open season is year round and you can even hunt them over bait or at night. It's awesome, such a rush to see a group come into a call and drive 3 or 4 at once!!! I also hunt deer, turkey, squirrel, fox, duck and have been known to nail a groundhog or two when the chance arrives. Also I hate PETA and anti-gun freaks that want to take my rights away. The NRA is so big PETA and anti-gun groups will never stop gun-owners and hunters. Plus all they do is complain and cry but they never do anything for the environment like conservation, planting food plots for animals or river-cleanups like most sportsmen do. So how many here hate hunting and gun owners. And if you do why do you come into the hunting section and try and "educate" us and stop us from hunting. I figure for every anti-hunting PETA freak that comes into the hunting section and trolls I will do the same here..

I want a fairly long range (200-300 yds) for groundhog, deer and future hunts. I like remington but savage is cheaper. What should i buy?

my lab is a very mushy dog its not agressive at all. It dosent bite or growl it loves attention. But whenever it gets hold of a groundhog it kills it is that normal for a dog. I mean ik labs are hunting dogs but im tired of having dead groundhogs in my backyard

hello all, i have been looking into buying a new hunting rifle and have settled on the .243 win. cal. because i will be hunting coyotes, groundhogs, etc. and deer. now i am having some difficulties choosing a rifle. i am split between two, the savage model 110 and the tikka t3 series.
i have chosen these two rifles because they are relatively cheap and in my price range which is about 500-600$$ max. i am having trouble finding a rifle because i am left-handed and idk… the savage is cheaper and all, also something that would help me decide on which one to buy would be the availability of parts and how cheap the parts are.
which model has the most parts readily available? so could i have some help on which one is better, has more parts/accessories, is left handed and is blued. could you help find one on the internet? i seem to can't find any. i appreciated all your help… thanks in advance.

ask me if you have any questions that may help clarify anything that is unclear.
or not just the savage 110, possibly any other model savage such as the 111. etc.

i would like a comparison of .243, .270, 07mm-08, .308, .25-06…

hello, i would like to start hunting but i don't have any medium caliber rifles. all i have is a few .22 LR rifles and 16 and 20 gauge shotguns. which will be used for rabbits and squirrels, etc. i am looking into buying a savage 11fl to hunt with. i will be hunting coyotes, groundhogs, deer, etc. which caliber would be a good caliber to hunt this game with? I'm not sure if i am going to use the pelts or not but i may end up doing so. what kind of pelt damage can i expect from each caliber with "pelt friendly" bullets available. i'm just looking for some information on hunting with these Calibers. also which one has the cheapest factory ammo, and widest selection of bullet size. (i.e. for the .243 there are bullets ranging from 55-about 100 grains.)
thank you in advance.. please ask for more info if you are having trouble answering…

ps.
i am about 5'5" somewhere around there and about 120lbs and 15 years old so i should grow more

and thanks guys

Could A 750FPS gun with a pellet kill a ground hog. I say no because groundhogs have a very strong structure even 22s have trouble killing them so you are happy to agree with me and tell me more why they wont kill it. MY dang friends say yes and I say no the worse you can do is make it pissed off at you. OK so When a gun says 750fps dose it mean it goes 750 FEET or power wise
Imm not the 1 giving you guys thumbs down I gave you all 1 thumbs up.

Is a .17 hmr sufficient for groundhog hunting? if so can u give me a source as to where to purchase a left handed one?

which one is better Taurus "the judge" .410/45 or Ruger GP-100……….hunting groundhogs rabbits deer

During the fall 2007 hunting season, I had some unusual interactions with a number of birds of prey. I was hunting groundhogs in an open field, when two red tailed hawks flew into a tree right above me. I was dressed in a hunter orange vest and cap and even moved around a bit to see their reaction. They had absolutely no fear of me, even though I was standing right below them. I also saw plenty of great horned owls during the daylight hours while hunting.

Now we come to the 2008 hunting season and today I had another unusual encounter with a hawk. I was squirrel hunting in the deep woods when I saw a squirrel run up a tree and hide on the other side. I decided to sit under a nearby tree in hopes that the squirrel would eventually think I had left and give me a shot. I had just sat down when I could hear something going on in the tree where I had previously spotted the squirrel. When I looked up, I saw a hawk carrying the squirrel away. I was only 10 yards away from that tree and the hawk decided to swoop down and grab the squirrel!

About a dozen years ago, I talked to a conservation officer (deputy game protector) who told me that we have overdone it in protecting the birds of prey. He told stories of releasing pheasants for the hunting season and watching hawks attack the newly released birds just moments after they had been set free. It was the first time I had ever heard someone say that there were too many, but now I am starting to agree.

Could it be that we have brainwashed ourselves into believing that birds of prey, such as hawks and owls, are somehow the sacred cows of the American outdoors? I would like to believe that I too am a convervationist, and my knee jerk reation is to follow along and stick-up for the continued protection of these birds. But, having talked to someone that makes a living protecting wildlife AND seeing for myself how unfraid these birds of prey have become, I am second guessing myself right now.

Any comments?

i only have big guns, i am going to hunt groundhogs, the only small gun i have is a 20 gauge 3'' with a modified choke. could i hunt groundhogs with 7# shot at 25 yards?

I know in the illinois hunting digest it says it is illegal to molest or destroy any feed bed, nest, den, house or other animal cavity. Is there an exemption for groundhogs or other animals that are damaging a landowner's property and crops?

i know it's not a hunting guestion but i just want to inspire conversation. my fav is my M1 carbine. love that thing for plinking shooting groundhogs hell even got i coyote with it.

please no anti gun comments. thanks

You guys are idiots i live in ontario and you can hunt small game with a pellet gun but it must be under 500fps. Thats not that powerful. you don't know what ur talking about ive bagged squirrels and even groundhogs with my pellet gun and its legal in ontario

THere is this one that I see every year… like clockwork.. I think I could hit him in one shot..

Link me a website with any information please. I am just curious to see if you know anyone that keeps them as a pet, even not in New Jersey. I know it is legal to hunt them because there are plenty of them so it isnt really a threat to the population at all.

Who are your friends?

At night I dream I slip
up into the trees

and blend between the leaves

until

a solitary owl finds me.

Who are your friends?

I fly beside him
on his hunting raids

against caravans
of fleeing mice and

long parades
of snuffling groundhogs.

Who are your friends?

And when we return
to the safety of the branches
far far above

we eat in silence

tearing at the flesh

and throwing up the bones.

Who are your friends?

In the morning
at the breakfast table

I look across at you

and smile

and you smile in return
as if you’ve been there
all along.

I have an 8 week old female wolf hybrid pup (Arctic, Timber wolf, Malamute, Aussie Shepherd, Husky mix). She's doing really great right now with housebreaking and I'm in the process of teaching her that my other older dog is NOT her chew toy (he won't take up for himself…). She's not all that hyper right now, likes to play but sleeps most of the time. I know she'll need lots of exercise when she gets older and was wondering if she might make a good hunting dog. I was thinking of using her as a tracker for when I bow hunt or to dig out groundhogs. Her family has a lot of workers in it; dad is a full Aussie Shepherd who works a cattle farm, grandmother was lead dog in 2 Iditarod races, and her mother also works cattle. I want to make sure she has plenty to do as she gets older so I don't have aggression problems with her. This is my first wolf dog and I'm just trying to get some ideas on how to keep her occupied once the wolf in her starts to kick in.
This question is also posted in the Hunting section.
Her mother is a Husky X Wolf, dad is full Aussie Shepherd. She has blue eyes like a Shepherd and her markings match the Aussie as well. I'm really just looking for suggestions on how to drain energy. Her mother is very friendly as is her dad, both are very well mannered and have no temperment issues, listen to their owners and don't wander away. I've done research on hybrids and know how they can be if left to their own devices. Were she to be used as a tracker, she'd be on a lead; not let loose to run all over the county.
KelsandDane,
I thought about sled training… but since I live in TN that might be difficult. We don't even get snow here in winter. Lol. I know she'd make a good pull dog, so I plan on harnessing her when she gets older. She can help me haul firewood. :) I never said I wanted a hunting dog. I said I was looking for SUGGESTIONS from people who were trying to HELP me. Not so I could sit here and read about what a "gullible twit" I am. I've had dogs all my life, many different breeds, mixes, mutts, and pure breds. I'm very aware that she wasn't specifically bred for anything except herding cattle should that be the road I take with her. I guaruntee you that she'll make me happier than something I'd pay a ridiculously high price for. I was looking for a companion animal; I got one. No doubt she'll prove some ignorant people wrong as she ages.
