varmint hunting rifles Archives

I have a 22-250 Howa Hogue and it currently has a scope. I would like to get a fairly high power scope with reticle that compensates for different yardage. There are 3 different scopes that i am looking at NIKON COYOTE RIFLESCOPE(not a fan of the BDC reticles), Barska Varmint Rifle scope(it has the rangefinding reticle and i would like to know how these works), NcStar Mark III 4-16×50 with the Sniper Reticle or the NcStar Mark III 6-24×50 Rangefinding. Please give a little insight. Thank You and Happy Hunting

Within a year i plan on owning some guns that merit reloading, and having only reloaded 30-06 rounds in Boy Scouts long ago, i don’t know where to start. Now this isn’t just another "How do i get into reloading?" question, but rather, i also have questions about reloading certain rounds, and what equipment can do them.

I plan on getting a PS90 in 5.7×28mm, which is a round that i cannot find locally, so i wonder if this is a round people reload, and what equipment works for it? I’m simply looking for economy here, for this gun being a really fun plinker.

I also am considering a rifle in .500 S&W, and at per shot, have to imagine i can save alot by reloading.

I also have a Tikka T3 .223 for varmint hunting (but mostly just 100 yard target shooting), is it worth reloading for accuracy? Or not, when rounds are so cheap?

I’d also like to load my own 2 3/4" 12ga shotgun shells, though not very many. (cheap hand tools?)

Is there a reloading press with dies for most of these?
Oh and i suppose if i’m reloading, i’d also do .308 and 30-06 for our deer guns, and maybe even get into doing .357 if there was sufficient cost savings and availability of superior rounds (like what CCI puts in their aluminum shelled rounds, best looking bullets i’ve seen compared to the big name brands). Eventually maybe .45ACP as well, for a USP. There seems to be an inverse exponential correlation between the number of years i’ve been single, and the number of guns i’ve been adding to my collection…

I’m about to buy a .22-250 for varmint hunting and I am going to use 40-50 grain bullets, and then very rarley use a 55gr bullet. And I don’t know weather to get a rifle with a 1:12 twist rate or a 1:14. the barrel is going to be 26" heavy barrel.

I know a 1:14 would be best for light bullets, but would there be any disadvantges if I used a 1:12 twist rate with my light bullets?
This is so I can stabilize heavy bullets when I use them

Keep in mind i’m ONLY interested in these 2 calibers, if i wanted to know about how accurate your 6mmbr shoots i would have asked. If i wanted to know how much you like 300winmag, i would have asked.

Out of the 2 calibers, 17hmr and 22wmr, which one has the best proven accuracy and consistancy? I already have a 22wmr rifle that shoots 1/4moa @ 100 yards, are the 17hmr’s more accurate, less accurate or about the same. The longest shot’s i would ever plan on taking would be between 100 yards and 150 yards, considering 150 yards is about max for consistant accuracy from the 22wmr. All I shoot now is paper, but in the next year i will be moving to where i can go varmint hunting, but am limited to ONLY using rimfire, hence my curiousity about 17hmr. Also any info concerning the 17mach2 would be appreciated.
I guess I should add something here, when I get my 1/4moa groups I’m shooting off a bench with a steady rest and sand bags and a scope. I’m also using a Savage 93FVSS (Heavy barrel stainless, thats been crowned and free floated)
At 50 yards using Federal #757 I’m shooting one hole groups with 5 shots. When I reach out to 100 yards I use Remington #R22M2, 5 shots give me one ragged hole, but not a nice single round hole like I get at 50 yards. Here’s the downside, Federal has discontinued #757, I’m already stocked up on it, at least enough to last me thru the summer, but once it’s gone, that’s it.

I’m going to buy the Beeman RS3. That rifle comes in .22 caliber OR .177 caliber. I am going to be using it for plinking, target shooting and some varmint hunting. Which caliber is best all-round? (I need experienced answers.)

I am 17 turning 18 in January. I live in the country have a lot of varmints and deer on a couple 100 acre property( forest, fields you know ) I am thinking maybe a semi-automatic maybe .223? I want to go big game hunting around Canada. So I am thinking of getting two rifles —1 varmint semi—-1 bolt action big bastard—- I have a clean record and wont be stupid with it I am just wondering how hard will it be for me to maybe get a remington r-25? I live in Ontario. I am guessing its a restricted firearm if i just want to use the gun for target and hunting will it not be a problem going through the safety courses and what not? Can you help me in any way here or give me any tips or advice?

Me and my friend just passed our hunting licence and posessions licence and my dad and his dad taking us out to buy 3 guns each. We had to pay around half. The calibers i want is a 22-250. rem, 270. win and 300. wsm. I have shot them all and i can handle and love them. I was think of gettting the 22-250 in either the browning A-Bolt varmint stalker, the 270. win in browning a-bolt medallion, tikka t3 hunter or winchester model 70 sporter duluxe, and 300. wsm in browning a-bolt stainless stalker. WHat do you think?

My friend wants a 223. rem but he doesn’t know what model, any suggestions, a 243. win in remington model 700. CDL and a 30-06 in remington model 700 sps. What do you think?
I already have a 22. cal and a 12 gauge shotgun, He has 2 12 gauge shotguns and 2 22. cal. so we dont need them

I Really want a better scope for Varmint Hunting I was looking for a good scope for this rifle to use for coyotes, bob cat ect. I don’t want a cheap quality scope but I do want a very good one I looked at a Leupold VXIII 6.5 - 20 X 50mm LR scope that I liked.or would you recommend another kind of scope for this rifle.I want to shoot up to 1000 - 2000 yds.

Ok so I got a Daisy Air Rifle for my birth-day, and I know what your all thinking "omfgzorz y would u want to kill a innocent little squirrelzorz" and no i only want to shoot them because i need some quick cash and i want to open up a varmint hunting business i will hunt tree rats moles crow raven opossum rats and mice here is the rifle i got it shoot at 300 fps with my pointed tip pellet ammunition http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?i=401594&pdesc=Daisy_Outdoor_Products_Grizzly_177_Air_Rifle&str=air%20rifle&merchID=4005&r=view Thank you for whatever answer you may provice me with and i will open my business in newark ohio and if you may try and give me a cool pest hunting services name?

Hi,
Im thinking of buying a Tikka Varmint (the one with the heavier barrel) in .338 Winchester Magnum for hunting large game. Is there anything that is bad about this rifle set up that i should know???

Thank you

Ive been looking at the:
Gamo shadow express 0
gamo varmint hunter 0
Gamo big cat 0
Crosman .22 800X quest 0
remington vantage air rifle .177
I would kinda like to get the gamo shadow express cuz its a shotgun/.22, but ive heard a lot of mixed reviews

CZ ZKM452 2E CLASSIC .22LR
CZ ZKM452 2E SILHOUETTE .22LR
Marlin 980S .22lr
Winchester Wildcat .22LR

i want the most accurate rifle in one of these. i want an rifle thats has a free float barrel. i am planning on hunting varmints and rabbits. i know that the winchester wildcat has a free float barrel but not sure with the others. if its possible i want an free float synthetic rifle.

i will be hunting mostly deer and elk, with the few varmints that need to leave. my price cap is 00 for rifle and scope. i will also be reloading my own brass, so something that is EZ to get the supplies to reload would be nice.
sorry it appears that i was not clear, and that i left some things out. the rilfe will not be for vermin ferther than 50 m. and i have a lever action 30-30 that i do not have a scope on and hunt up to 60m with it. but i hunt more often with a bow, not a rifle. i have been slowly making the kills closer and closer, and know i have made it down to about 3.1m. so i would like to start going longer because i can’t go much closer and i would like the challeng. plus if it is a question of doing the math or knowing the physics, it is not a problem i have a masters in physics. and i am well on my way to a Ph. D. in chemistry. so i you have answered already could you add any thing that you would recomend, wether it is tips or was of traning or any thing. Oh and the reloading i have a 40 cal. XDM that i reload.

I’m just looking for a hunting rifle with extremely flat trajectory for shooting predators, caliber isnt as much as an issue more of the trajectory and ballistics of the bullet. But obviously caliber has an affect but please let me know your opinions of a very good predator hunting rifle, Thank you very much.

Through a great answer from Bound’s hubby, I was able to decide on the AR-15 as a platform for long-range target shooting.

Now I face a problem, I live in California. I have been trying to search through the laws regarding this type of weapon. The government sites state that they are banned as assault rifles. Other sites say that small mods like fixed mags and modified grips will negate assault rifle status.

Anyone have first hand experience with AR laws in CA?

Also, I saw at the Fulton Armory site a 22LR rimfire upper for varmint hunting. Count I possibly purchase that since it says its rimfire status does not make it an assault rifle?

If I do purchase it, can I change it to a standard centerfire upper when I can afford it? All I really know is that one selling point of the AR line is modular design and interchangeability of parts.

Thanks in advance for any help on the matter. I’m eager to get started and have read that wait periods can be in excess of three weeks.

i have a gamo whisper pellet rifle. ive sighted it in at about 30-40ft but when i go to shoot a varmint at about 40yards it wont hit its target. also i use the polymer tipped hunting pellets, i love them. but i was wondering if there is any better pellet u an get that will really knock a squirrel down at about 50yards. thank you very much!
its .177 al
im also useing high power scope

Right now i have a 30-30 marlin 30 AS, 22LR Mossberg, 12 gauge single shot (not sure on the manufacture it was a gift), 30-06 Remington model 742 woodsmaster, and a 7mm rem mag Remington model 700 BDL. The 30-06, the chamber wont close properly. So im looking for a new 30-06 and i was thinking of either getting the Sako A7, Tikka T3 Laminate Stainless, Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker or maybe the Sako 85 Finnlight. I would want the finnlight but its really expensive. What do you suggest?
as you can see i don’t have a varmint load and i love coyote hunting so im debating between a 22-250 or a 243. win. They both shoot about the same, fast and flat. The 243. win would give me a chance to grow to hunt whitetail. So what do you think. I was looking at either the Sako A7 or the Tikka T3 laminate if i dont get one of those models in the 30-06

Hey,
I’m looking for a quality air rifle for a friend, and I want to know what you recommend. It would be used mainly for target practice, but occasionally for varmint hunting. Modest price range of 0-200
Thanks

I’m interested in purchasing a rifle. I’m looking at either the Remington 700 SPS varmit or the Savage 10 FP or Savage 111FXP3 package. I’d like to keep the cost low seeing as how i’d still need a scope and mounts/rings so the savage package looks appealing.
My question is which is a good caliber to buy? I plan to spend more time with it at the range than in the woods. Hunting would be more of a secondary purpose and targets a primary. When used for hunting, it would be for white tail deer.
I already own a couple pistols and shotguns as well as AR’s and varmint rifles but am trying to own at least one from every category (revolvers/pistols/semi auto, shotguns, etc). What is good? 270? 308? 30-06? 7mm? 300 mag? 25-06? 243?
What are your opinions of the calibers you’ve used? Which would be a good way to go?

I am wanting to get a Rossi single shot .223 remington adult/full size rifle sometime soon. Are they good rifles for the money and do they last long/dependable/accurate. I was planning on getting a cheap .223 just for plinking and varmint hunting, will this one work. I have found it on a website for only 6 regular barrel or 0 heavy barrel. what is the differences between the barrels. Should i pay 0 for a Rossi .223 rifle/ Is it a good gun/buy? Thanks for answering and any tips and advice greatly appreciated!

im going to get a rimmington 700 for deer hunting is a varmint rifle worse equal or better for the job then a regular 700 i would not want to spent alot of money to figure out it was a waste and also if u know please answer this too if the model 770 is better why is it about 0.00 cheaper

Ok so im about to invest 0+ dollars into a Gamo rifle that i would be able to take down squirls and other small/medium game with. Now my two choices have narrowed down to the Gamo Varmint Hunter and the Gamo CFX both have very good ratings. which one of these weapons would be the best for me to hunt with and which ammo would you recommend? Thanks =)

If any one nows a good name to buy a .223 from, please tell me.
Im looking prefferably for a specific name if you reccomend as gun.
Im going to be varmint hunting, and i want to buy a .223
i want a accurate light gun with not much kick for under 0.
PLEASE tell me a brand or specific name of the gun because i want the perfect 1. im 12 years old and 5′9 so please take that into mind if needed

i just found a rifle kit that is everything to build an AR 223/5.56 except for the stripped lower reciever. im looking for a decent, yet affordable deal that can be bought on a college students budget. id like it to be without the carrying handle so that i can put a scope on it for varmint hunting. it doesnt have to have a bull barrel, but if its a good deal i definitely wouldnt mind lol

I am very interested in this rifle. Light, rigid, great accuracy out of the box. I want to hunt from coyote to deer, and possibly elk, but am unsure of the "varmint" tag. I don’t care to shoot prairie dogs, but enjoy the range.
