Predator hunting rifle delima!!!?
I am mainly a deer hunter and have two deer hunting rifles. One is a bolt action savage .270 and the other a single shot H&R .243. I love to blast some predators in the offseason and am wanting to set up a rifle for predator hunting. ( just camo and a bipod and such..) I dont care too much about the size of hole in the hides cuz most coyotes round here got mange and if i do shoot a pretty one i just tan in myself and keep it for a throw rug
so i was wondering which rifle i would be better off "setting up" to hunt predators in the offseason? I am leaning towards the .243 but does the fact that its a single shot rifle take away from it??

I have a Handi-Rifle in 243 also(son’s deer rifle I reload for),and I think it would make a great coyote rifle with the only caveat being it has to stay grouping well all the time, which some single shots don’t do,but if you are getting around 2 inch groups at 100 yards consistently you should be fine. One concern might be using a Bipod on an H&R (or T/C Encore) is flex along the hinge joint could cause some accuracy issues-which is why you want to double check at the range before you hit the field. You have options with the 243 (or 270) with loading light weight Varmint style bullets or just using your deer set-up. Your deer bullets might rip the yote up pretty good, depending on where you hit.
As for single shot vs. bolt (or even semi) you don’t get too many follow up shots with unwounded coyotes anyway, and you rarely get chances at doubles,so the single shot isn’t all that much of a handicap-just like with any hunting,it is the first shot that counts most.
When you shoot accurate, repeatability doesn’t matter. I would choose the .243 too. Flatter shooting, cheaper ammo, and less recoil.
because a single shot action has only a weak union with with the barrel. if u can get a bolt action .243 i would go for that. .270 is a little too big.
go with the .243. The gun i hunt coyotes with is a Harrington and Richardson .223 and it works fine for me. It will teach you to make your first shot count
i would go with the 243 have one shot will make you aim more carefully.but if you don,t care about holes in hides use the 270 use them both anyway and keep your skills up with both of them. i use cross sticks instead of a bi-pod i hunt sitting on a hill or a ageists a tree it’s just better for me and it works with any rifle i take
Go with your H&R in .243 Win and work up some loads using a 60 gr. bullet or maybe a little bit lighter bullet.
go with the 243 it may not be the best but then it does not cost a thousand . I have several 243s i keep for use by my kids when they are here in Alaska. and they are ok for everything but big bear and moose.
set it up with a scope about 6x and not a variable sight in to shoot about 4 inches high @ 100 yds.
go for it
Use the .243…..
Look over this .243 cartridge guide… Its geared a bit more towards target shooters but the info is still quite relevant……

Although the H&R is commonly thought of as an economy rifle it actually is very decent for the money…. Topped off with a decent scope I can see you hitting yotes out to 250, maybe 300 yards if your good……
