ive been hunting coyotes for a long time now. at first i just shot them with a rifle, but after awhile it got kind of boring so i started using a crossbow of my buddies. i eventually bought a compound bow and was using that for awhile. than i started trapping them, hunting them with dogs etc.
its exhilarating, and ive ever since evolved from that rifle. currently i have some farm rabbits i keep caged in my shed, and whenever i go hunting, i bring one with me in a cage. i like to break one of their legs, or put a pin through their nose that i can tug on with a string. i bring it with me hunting because its cries are far more realistic than my predator call. occasionally i bring gas and matches if they need extra encouragement. DONT WORRY- i always bring my tire iron to put them out of their misery after the hunt, unless they die from shock during the hunt.
anyways, i recently got my hands on a flammenwerfer 35 from some contacts of mine, and was considering using it hunting coyotes. i hear they have some distance and would at least be able to replace the use of a shotgun on one of my hunts. do you guys think it would work? i think ill try it out on at least one coyote to decide its effectiveness.
what methods do you guys use to kill coyotes? what is your favorite? please share.
i am not "warped", and this is a legitimate question.
I live in ontario and my hunting partner owns some farm land which i hunt rabbit, deer, duck&geese and this year i am hunting coyote. Now there are tons of coyote there, last year while hunting whitetail i saw 4 coyotes in 3 hours.
Now my hunting partner is using his 223. with 55 grain ballistic silver tips. I dont own a varmint load but i am getting one soon. Im looking into getting a 22-250 because i have hunted with it before and loved it. I was either thinking of getting it in the remington model 700 sps stainless or the browning A-Bolt varmint stalker. Which one should i get? But i am hunting with a 270. win 100 grain untill i get it
What is the best set up for coyotes/bobcats? How long to call? Decoys? What brings em in best?
I’m making a selection for a predator hunting rifle for wolves, coyotes, cougars, etc out too 250 yards or so and have narrowed it down to the savage 12 varminter series in .22-250 or the howa m-1500 varminter in .22-250 and also the bushmaster .223 varminter rifle. I’m simply looking for performance in a predatr hunting rifle. Let me know which one you would choose, much appreciated!
I Really want a better scope for Varmint Hunting I was looking for a good scope for this rifle to use for coyotes, bob cat ect. I don’t want a cheap quality scope but I do want a very good one I looked at a Leupold VXIII 6.5 - 20 X 50mm LR scope that I liked.or would you recommend another kind of scope for this rifle.I want to shoot up to 1000 - 2000 yds.
I am mainly a deer hunter and have two deer hunting rifles. One is a bolt action savage .270 and the other a single shot H&R .243. I love to blast some predators in the offseason and am wanting to set up a rifle for predator hunting. ( just camo and a bipod and such..) I dont care too much about the size of hole in the hides cuz most coyotes round here got mange and if i do shoot a pretty one i just tan in myself and keep it for a throw rug
so i was wondering which rifle i would be better off "setting up" to hunt predators in the offseason? I am leaning towards the .243 but does the fact that its a single shot rifle take away from it??
Im getting a new gun to hunt coyotes with and shoot groundhogs or prairie dogs now and then. I wont be taking super long shots but occasionally i might take a 300 yard shot. I know that the 22-250 rem is an incredible cartridge and i know all about it. But i was also wanted to try the 204. ruger cause i heard such great things about it.
Now if i was going to get the 204. ruger, i want it in a browning a-bolt but browning doesn’t sell 204. rugers. I have seen one in this caliber before, how can i get one like it?
Don’t reply hunting for wild buffalo on the Serengeti, something achievable for the average middle class person is requested..
I mean something you have done before and look forward to such as Deer or Varmint, Coyotes or Boar or Bear, whatever…..
Any reason why this one game type is specially enjoyable to you
I have 400 acres in Fairfield, SC. And it is LOADED with coyotes. I mean everywhere you look there are tracks going back and forth. I have shot three within five minutes one day while i was deer hunting. I wanted to start getting into predator calling but our property has like no big open fields. We have 2 or 3 small 1/2 acre fields but thats it. Can someone tell me how i should try to call them in? Thanks
also whats a good ammo for these little guys (got a budget) and some long and short shooting tips please.PS do you eat other varmints because i know you dont eat yotes (coyotes)
I’d like to get into varmint hunting with a rifle (currently with a shotgun).
Primarily, I’m looking for something to kill coyotes with (maybe groundhogs but they are few and far between here) and don’t care about pelts.
My issue though is that I’m likely going on a prarie dog hunt. I live in the midwest so this is likely only something I’ll do a couple times in my life.
I have a 17hmr but these guys like shooting past it’s effective range.
The new rifle would be my primary gun for that shoot.
Ammunition cost and overheating are my concerns.
A couple points
1. I don’t buy a lot of guns - never have. Nor do I like selling my guns for sentimental reasons.
2. I also don’t shoot alot at the range.
3. As a deer rifle, I only have a 7mag. It might be nice to have something to back that up with especially if I’m only hunting does (bucks can go up beyond 300 pounds here so I’d like the extra power)
4. I don’t know if I can justify buying a 223 or 22-250 for such limited specific use (albeit a more logical choice for p-dogs).
Thoughts?
i am 13 i hunt in middle illinois. it is mixed country with farmland and fields. the coyotes have really taken a toll on the deer. i might eventually hunt fox and other varmints. i plan to use the fur. i want a gun that will take them cleanly at 250 yards with minimal pelt damage. as i said earlier i plan to use a .223. i would really appreciate it if no one calls me cruel.
Im am looking for a rifle for varmint shooting and a bit of target shooting.
I will be hunting varmints such as rabbits, squirrels and coyotes.
Both of these are chamber in .223

Which do you recommend?
I have read an article from rifle shooting magazine but cant make up my mind

i am in the market for a varmint gun. i have heard about the .308 reaching accurately out to 400 yards. but for just a strictly varmints? .22/250? .222? .243. i would be shooting coyotes and ground hogs, and maybe a fox or two. what scope should i use? i like Bushnell, but what else? not many shots over 200 yards, but i might have to shoot farther. lots of details would be very good.
we have been calling in coyotes at my house for a while and when we first started we called in five coyotes in two nights but now we cant get anything in we thought that we might have been over calling them so we waited like two weeks and still nothing. we were using primarily jack rabbit distress calls so we switched to cottontail distress in hopes of getting one but still nothing. then we tried using a howler with the jack rabbit distress and we could get them howling but we couldnt bring them in close enough to see them any help would be appreciated

Please note; while I think this IS one awesome firearm, I do not suggest it for hunting. And as others will tell you machineguns require special tax stamp licensing.
But I think it would be just the thing for law enforcement use and for those darn coyotes killing your calves or chickens. A ranchers best friend! :p
Your opinion of this firearm please.
I agree that; it would be worthless at long range
and that its comparison to a shotgun is ridiculous.
I worked as a ranch hand years ago and had to shoot lots of coyotes. Trying to shoot several before they scattered was difficult even with a semi-auto shotgun. The 180 would have been nice for that at close range. I used the Ruger mini14 for ranch work and now use a 25-06 for varmint hunting.
Yep the 180 would be a fun thing to play with that’s why I put this question up.

It seems most people that bitch the most have never shot one… A lot of people enjoy competitive shooting this style gun , plus they are great for varmint hunting, which is what I use mine for. It keeps the coyotes out of the chickens.
If you would read anything about the first 100 days of the Obama administration you would see that it IS on his agenda ti re-institute the Clinton era ban…. I figured you libs would pay attention to your guy…or maybe that is how he got there in the first place
I live in northern Wisconsin 20 miles from Lake Superior and I have allready taken hunters safety and been hunting for five years but I want to try trapping this fall. I live right by a ton of lakes and there are beaver, muskrat, foxes, racoons, coyotes etc.
I have also looked at traps and haven’t found many cheap ones so any information about traps and trapping would be just great!!!!!!!!!
What is the best way to make a dead rabbit bait for varmints? Coyotes, foxes, etc.
the best scope for a varmint rifle.
I need manufactuers and terms. (minimal magnification – maximum magnification × objective lens)
Again i will be using this scope and rifle for varmint hunting.
The Rifle which will be used:
Savage 12 Series Varmint-Model 12 FVSS in .223 caliber
Varmints-anything from birds, to coyotes to anything else that is a potential hazard to my crop or property
We live in the Raymond MN area. On a hobby farm and last night my dogs and what i believe were coyotes where howling back and forth with each other. This pack of dogs sounded really close. I have slowing been losing small animals on my farm. I have not seen any coyotes by our place for almost two years and they have always stayed on the outside skirts of the farm but i think they may be wondering on the farmstead.
i am just now starting to get into predator hunting and i need to get some calls but i have no clue what type of calls to get. im mainly gonna be hunting bobcats and coyotes so if you could tell me what type of calls i need that would be great. i don’t want an electronic call though. so wat calls do i need to get started?
This is a paragraph from the small game rules and regulations for New Mexico–
"Rabbits and Other Nongame Species:
Common nongame species include coyotes, skunks,
rabbits and rock squirrels. Residents are not required
to have a hunting license to take rabbits or other
nongame species. Nonresidents must have either a
nonresident, nongame license or any current New
Mexico nonresident hunting license.
Nongame species may be taken on State Trust Lands
opened by easement by persons holding a valid
hunting or trapping licenses for protected species on
those lands during the individual’s hunt or trapping
season. Nongame species may also be taken on U.S.
Forest Service and BLM lands open to hunting."
Which is better? Burn and cut into pieces and place at the edges of my property. OR Cook and eat the beast?
They are so cruel. I love all animals but not Coyotes . They are the republicans of the animal kingdom.
The cold weather is coming back pretty soon, and that means coyotes and bob cats will get there thick fur and tails. I need a varmint rifle. All these years i have been hunting with my buddies Browning A-Bolt 223. rem. I want my own, I either want a 22-250. rem or a 243. win. I want it in the the 22-250 in either the Tikka T3 lite Stainless, Sako A7 or a remington model 700 sps stainless. What do you think of these models? if i get the 243. win i would get it in the Browning X-Bolt medallion
