Within a year i plan on owning some guns that merit reloading, and having only reloaded 30-06 rounds in Boy Scouts long ago, i don’t know where to start. Now this isn’t just another "How do i get into reloading?" question, but rather, i also have questions about reloading certain rounds, and what equipment can do them.

I plan on getting a PS90 in 5.7×28mm, which is a round that i cannot find locally, so i wonder if this is a round people reload, and what equipment works for it? I’m simply looking for economy here, for this gun being a really fun plinker.

I also am considering a rifle in .500 S&W, and at per shot, have to imagine i can save alot by reloading.

I also have a Tikka T3 .223 for varmint hunting (but mostly just 100 yard target shooting), is it worth reloading for accuracy? Or not, when rounds are so cheap?

I’d also like to load my own 2 3/4" 12ga shotgun shells, though not very many. (cheap hand tools?)

Is there a reloading press with dies for most of these?
Oh and i suppose if i’m reloading, i’d also do .308 and 30-06 for our deer guns, and maybe even get into doing .357 if there was sufficient cost savings and availability of superior rounds (like what CCI puts in their aluminum shelled rounds, best looking bullets i’ve seen compared to the big name brands). Eventually maybe .45ACP as well, for a USP. There seems to be an inverse exponential correlation between the number of years i’ve been single, and the number of guns i’ve been adding to my collection…

I was hooked on guns from the moment I first shot a pop can with my friend’s gun a few weeks go. Ever since then, I’ve been drooling over guns on the internet and wishing I could shoot some more, and have one of my own. Finally ended up getting my very own 12 gauge Mossberg Maverick today for starters. I annihilated some Gatorade bottles on a gravel road by his land less than half an hour ago and already I’m dying to go out again. When’s the next Shotgunners Anonymous meeting again? :)

Anyway, enough blabbering, to keep the topic legit I have some questions about ammunition. Unfortunately the shells seem a little on the steep side of pricing (Big shock, huh? I knew this fact but ignored it until now), I picked up a 25 box of game load for today. Are there any cheaper alternatives, if you just want to go out in the field and practice your aim, and not really do any damage? Sorry, I don’t really know a lot.

Also, I’m going to screw around and shoot some geese with my buddies this weekend. What type of ammo should I buy for optimum accuracy? Also, what other types of wildlife are "fair game" for my gun? Just wondering, I’m not interested in much but shooting some birds for now, but will this do for varmint hunting, other game, etc?

Thanks for the help, I appreciate it!

Me and my friend just passed our hunting licence and posessions licence and my dad and his dad taking us out to buy 3 guns each. We had to pay around half. The calibers i want is a 22-250. rem, 270. win and 300. wsm. I have shot them all and i can handle and love them. I was think of gettting the 22-250 in either the browning A-Bolt varmint stalker, the 270. win in browning a-bolt medallion, tikka t3 hunter or winchester model 70 sporter duluxe, and 300. wsm in browning a-bolt stainless stalker. WHat do you think?

My friend wants a 223. rem but he doesn’t know what model, any suggestions, a 243. win in remington model 700. CDL and a 30-06 in remington model 700 sps. What do you think?
I already have a 22. cal and a 12 gauge shotgun, He has 2 12 gauge shotguns and 2 22. cal. so we dont need them

In my last question I asked about the difference between the 3 common .22 bullets.
Me and my boyfriend were talking about a good gun for me to get and he said that a .22 or a .223 would be a good choice. He has a .22 pistol and a .22 lever action and the leaver action can shoot all 3 types of .22 bullets.
I don’t know much about .22 rifles. I’d be getting the gun for varmint control/some hunting (rabbits, squirrels, armadillos, etc..) and just shooting.

I like bolt actions and I like the way a leaver action looks too, but I’ve never shot one… yet.
I have about 5 from graduation money and I don’t need a very expensive gun.. doesn’t really need a scope.. peep sights would be alright with me too. I prefer a wooden stock over synthetic too. Help?
What would be a good gun or some good guns to look into getting?
I am 18, so there’s no need to freak out lol

Also, would a pawn shop be a good place to get one?
This is my dad’s, was my grandpa’s gun (the one that I was talking about in my previous question).

A gun like this would be fine with me.

Its purdy scuffed up, but it’s been around a while.

The gun is a sidelever .22 that screws apart into two pieces and stores in a suitcase. it has a leapers 4 x 40 red mil dot scope. i used to have a pellet gun that fired 900 fps in .22 that took out everything in my yard. i am concerned that this gun will obviously not live up to the expectations but i was told my other gun had inflated fps with light pellets.i bought more than 50 dollars worth of the most devastating hunting pellets on the market from predators to rws hollow points. i want this gun to be able to shoot faster than 500 fps..money isnt an object

heres the gun and for the record i know not all chinese guns are good but my last one was and it wrecked shit…

We shot primarily Fulton Arms and Bushmaster .223, a Remington 40x .22 BR, S&W .17 HMR and a couple of the most explosive shots were with a .300 Win Mag loaded with a 50gr Vmax sabot round@4700+ fps. The .50BMG did not see much action on this trip, maybe we will have better luck later in the season. This is the latest vid following a March 08 Ranch Trip. Please see DRTYFN’s vids for more footage of some our earlier escapades. Much of this footage was shot with a “rifle cam” mount attached to …

It’s going to be used as a varmint rifle and spare deer rifle for a couple of friends who hunt with me and don’t own guns. Also, I need something that would be a good rifle for my niece to start with next year.

The other night I shot a opossum in the chest area with a .22 cal Predator Polymag air rifle pellet… It dropped like a rock(fell over on it’s side). It seemed to have died instantly… I know head shots are quick but I think the pellet struck his heart or something because it just stopped moving,as compared to when I shot 3 pellets into the head of a opossum I got before this one… The head shot opossum before this last one I just got in the chest, fliped around like a gator doing a death role once I made contact with it’s brain… A real violent head shot death… Crazier than any other head shot experience ever… Dirt was flying everywhere… What are factors involved when figuring out which type of shot is best for that certain animal…. Heart shot or head shot???? P.S. I can make difficult shots from far out, using most guns. AR’s to pellet guns… My accuracy is on point to hit um wherever seems best…. Oh yeah just for your information: Buy a pellet gun and practice shooting inside/outside at home. It truly is great practice for when you go shooting or hunting for reals. The Daisy Powerline is an excellent air rifle with great accuracy for only .95 at Walmart. It comes with a cheesy scope but it still works great and will keep you on point just like me… Thanks for the advice and extra details in your answer…. Tim

I’d like to get into varmint hunting with a rifle (currently with a shotgun).
Primarily, I’m looking for something to kill coyotes with (maybe groundhogs but they are few and far between here) and don’t care about pelts.

My issue though is that I’m likely going on a prarie dog hunt. I live in the midwest so this is likely only something I’ll do a couple times in my life.
I have a 17hmr but these guys like shooting past it’s effective range.
The new rifle would be my primary gun for that shoot.
Ammunition cost and overheating are my concerns.

A couple points
1. I don’t buy a lot of guns - never have. Nor do I like selling my guns for sentimental reasons.
2. I also don’t shoot alot at the range.
3. As a deer rifle, I only have a 7mag. It might be nice to have something to back that up with especially if I’m only hunting does (bucks can go up beyond 300 pounds here so I’d like the extra power)
4. I don’t know if I can justify buying a 223 or 22-250 for such limited specific use (albeit a more logical choice for p-dogs).

Thoughts?

I live in Texas. The law here says I can use guns that use centerfire ammunition to hunt wild game. It prohibits rimfire and airguns, except for squirrels and varmint. It does not prohibit semi-automatic rifles anywhere.

If you went hunting, would you use the AK-47?

I have a mossberg .22 with a 30 rnd clip that i think i can kill a coyote with or should i use my other guns which are my 1943 GM .30 M1, beretta storm 9mm carbine, or a .20 ga.

I don’t hunt game, but I am a "plinking" addict, and I pay a little attention to gun laws. After reading two tragic stories this weekend, I rethought my stance on gun ownership, and started thinking a little outside the box.

The news…
Father mistakes son for turkey: http://www.transworldnews.com/NewsStory.aspx?id=43899&cat=14

I started thinking about ways to stop these kinds of horrible accidents from occurring, and I started thinking about the pros/cons of gun restrictions. Here’s what I thought of… what if we restricted gun usage based on I.Q.? People would still be allowed personal firearms to protect their homes, but only those meeting or exceeding I.Q. standards could carry guns outside of their homes to hunt with. This could also extend to other things that can impair judgment, such as prior drug use or history of alcoholism. Also, what do you think the minimum I.Q. should be (I’m thinking 100).
jsied96 - There is no reason to start ad hominem attacks, I was merely thinking out loud and looking for feedback. If people think it’s a good idea it may be worth writing to Congress about. If not… well… no harm, no foul.

W&S - True, the tests vary quite a bit, but maybe a hybrid standardized test could be created to cover basic mental capacity as well as firearm knowledge. Thank you for answering intelligently.

Side note: I suggested an I.Q. of 100 as that is the base average. However smart of stupid humanity becomes over the years, the average is always reset to an arbitrary 100 to keep the scores relevant.
Maggie - A very good point. Might be a good topic for a question in the Parenting section.

Tim B - My point is that the 4 basics aren’t enough. They are great guidelines, but anyone can pass basic safety classes and then go crazy in the woods. I guess what I’m trying to say is that classes are temporary… stupid is forever.
Chad - Great answer, and an even better quote.
Digger - I think mental disorders will a trump an I.Q. of any size… maybe something else to test for… maybe not. Good post.
Larry - That’s seems a little too paranoid for me. I think our current president is proof enough that this country is not as "left" as you think.

Frosty - I will admit that the thought did cross my mind that many of these things are not accidents at all… but children… that’s just too horrible to imagine. I hope to God they were accidents and not premeditated crimes.
I’m logging off for the day. You’ve all had good responses so far, and I appreciate your input. I’ll give my thoughts/replies to any new posts in the morning.

On TV news, cops treat people with stockpiles of weapons as a danger that must be eliminated. I am a law abiding taxpayer that realizes the investment value of guns. I also enjoy hunting and target shooting once in a while. I have never been in any trouble with the law. If police knew of my weapon cache, would they try to confiscate it? All weapons were obtained legally at the time, although they may require permits now.

Looking for a new rifle and here’s a list of rifles I’ve looked at. The problem is nobody I know shoots one that I can try out. Model 700 VSF
Model 700 SPS Varmint
Model 700 VTR
Model 700 Sendero SF II
I would like the caliber to be in 308. Any input on either of these would be great. I am a huge hunter and want to get into target competition to improve my markmenship and its a extension of hunting seasom. Every thing that I’ve read has pointed to this caliber. I do not reload yet but am looking towards it. I currently shoot a 25-06 Rem, but am looking to improve it over the next few months (stock, triger, barrel and action. I’m just average guy who enjoys shooting to the full extent and looking for any advise on these guns or others that you have worked with. Thanks

I enjoy target shooting in my backyard, where i have a safe 100 yards with backstop, in the countryside, and some day i would like to go prairie dog hunting. I already have very nice .17HMR and .223 bolt-actions, and currently have been saving to purchase a nice AR15 for this. The .223 performs ballistically and economically for what i want to do, but I am not very familiar with the AR15 rifles.

What are the accuracy upgrades done to this rifle, available from the makers? What upgrades can be done by the owner without gunsmithing? What is a good length of barrel, for a gun that won’t be carried around in the field out of a case? What are the different receiver styles that i see on the guns? Some are original looking, others streamlined billet. Advantages? What is a very good yet affordable trigger upgrade to get a very clean breaking pull with almost zero travel (like a Tikka T3)?

Can i buy another cheap barrel / top receiver off the net without FFL to swap for plinking?

I’m starting to enjoy hunting and Love guns
